The opposition has made two clear demands – and they have been accepted, announced the president of the Social Democrats and one of the leaders of the European Alliance, Damir Šehović.
"The parliamentary and institutional crisis that arose after the termination of the mandate of a judge of the Constitutional Court is being resolved with the support of the Venice Commission, whose opinion will be fully implemented. Until then, the procedure for electing a judge of that court is suspended," said Šehović.
He added that the European agenda is a priority.
"There will be no opening of identity issues that divide society - such as amendments to the Constitution regarding the official language, the Law on Montenegrin Citizenship and other topics that part of the parliamentary majority insists on. This is an important step forward, because raising such topics at this political moment would mean permanently diverting Montenegro from the European agenda and causing new political tensions with unpredictable consequences. The agreement is clear - it is now up to the government to prove its real commitment to European integration," said Šehović.
Belan: Another opportunity has opened up, possibly the last one
The president of the Liberal Party and one of the leaders of the European Alliance, Vatroslav Belan, says that "another opportunity has opened up" for this generation of Montenegrin politicians.
"Speaking of the agreement that Prime Minister Spajić signed with the opposition, let's return to a moment that, due to the massacre in Cetinje and the difficult days of grief in Montenegro, we were justifiably unable to think about - Romania and Bulgaria became full members of the Schengen zone on January 1st of this year," Belan said.
According to him, this generation of Montenegrin politicians has another opportunity, "quite possibly the last", to ensure that future generations "can travel freely, get an education, get a job and create their future as equal citizens within the European family of nations".
"We can work on this together and create a happy and successful Montenegrin society, or we can remain in the Balkan quagmire ruled by autocratic regimes and destructive struggles of imposing and denying identity, eternally creating fear of the other, the different, the democratic and progressive. It is always up to us and does not depend on what we say, but on what we do," said Belan.
Mugoša: I welcome the agreement, the opposition's offer was responsible and fair
The president of the SD parliamentary group and representative of the European Union, Boris Mugoša, said that the opposition's offer was responsible and fair.
"We truly want Montenegro to be the first EU member state in a few years, and in that sense, I welcome the agreement and consensus between the opposition, the Prime Minister, and the President of the PES," Mugoša said.
Its implementation, he said, will show whether others want it too.
"What follows is: resolving the constitutional, or institutional, crisis with the support of the Venice Commission, full focus on the EU agenda, which includes electoral reform and a moratorium on issues that divide the public," said Mugoša.
