At a meeting of representatives of the parliamentary majority, an agreement was reached on the formation of an Inquiry Committee to collect information and facts about the actions of state bodies and other entities regarding cigarette smuggling in Montenegro, announced Boris Bogdanović, head of the MPs' Club and Secretary General of the Democrats.

"The goal of the parliamentary investigation is to continue to shed light on the deep and decades-old problems associated with cigarette smuggling, establish responsibility, and propose concrete measures to effectively combat this form of organized crime," he stressed.

In accordance with the Law, the Inquiry Committee will not conduct investigations into cases for which criminal proceedings are already underway or which are directly related to existing cases in the competent judicial authorities, Bogdanović added.

"We particularly emphasize that, if during the work of the Inquiry Committee investigating cigarette smuggling, cases related to politically motivated murders are identified, such cases will be immediately forwarded to the already established Inquiry Committee responsible for investigating those cases.

"The political decision to form the Inquiry Committee confirms the determination of the state of Montenegro to break with the legacy of organized crime, strengthen the rule of law and establish clear accountability," the statement signed by the head of the Democratic Party parliamentary group concludes.
