The informal student group "Kamo śutra", which organized protests after the mass murder in Cetinje on January 1, announced that it is ceasing its activities.
They say that, due to "daily threats, media attacks and fatigue", they reached a situation where, with the number of active members, they could no longer guarantee that they could organize gatherings in a way that would guarantee that everything was ready and everyone at the gathering was safe.
They emphasize that the only motive for their actions was the desire to fight for a safer and more secure country and justice for the innocent victims and their families, and that the only goal of their actions was to suppress violence.
This group, among other things, demanded the dismissal of Deputy Prime Minister Aleksa Bečić and Minister of Interior Danilo Šaranović.
They said they were trying to draw attention to the fact that two crimes in which 23 people died, including four children, must not be forgotten, and that "as a society we must take collective and individual responsibility so that nothing like this happens again."
"Despite the great support, strength and will that a large part of society has shown in this fight, a large part of the public, including political parties and certain media outlets, has been much more concerned with us. Such interest is understandable in a country of eternal fraud, corruption and division, however, we believe that such a topic should never have been tarnished or overshadowed by such investigations," the post on Iks reads.
They say that their collective's struggle has failed, "because it was politicized and systematically rendered meaningless from the very beginning, which has diverted attention from the crimes themselves, for which no one has yet taken responsibility, nor, apparently, feels it." On the contrary, as they said, every call for responsibility directed at decision-makers in Montenegro is interpreted as a personal attack.
"Organizing protests, blockades, and performances requires human effort and time. Our collective has put their lives aside for two months, dealing exclusively with this issue every day. Due to daily threats, media attacks, and fatigue, we have reached a situation where, with the number of active members, we could not guarantee that we could organize gatherings in a way that would guarantee that everything was ready and everyone at the gathering was safe," they said.
They state that they should have released the statement a month ago, but that they were still trying to reorganize the team and their way of working.
"Therefore, we owe an apology to all citizens, and especially to the families of the victims. We have disappeared from the public eye for too long without any explanation. This does not mean that the fight for a fairer and safer Montenegro is over with us. Citizens have been organizing blockades in Cetinje for two months now, and a warning blockade has been announced for Sunday from 15:20 PM to 18:26 PM. We invite everyone to join the citizens of Cetinje on that day. Therefore, we call on you, dear citizens, to take collective responsibility for suppressing violence," the announcement reads.
