Šućo Orahovac, a member of the Executive Board of the City Committee of the Europe Now Movement (PES) Podgorica, announced today that the President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, is taking a position contrary to the interests of Ulcinj.
"Regarding the statements of the President of Montenegro, we feel the need to address the public, especially representatives of the civil sector, citizens and the media, in order to present the facts and protect the public interest. The President of the state, who until yesterday was part of the political project from which this investment agreement emerged, today takes a position contrary to the interests of Ulcinj - one of the most endangered cities in terms of development and employment," Orahovac emphasized in a statement.
He added that the agreement with investors from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is neither secret nor illegal.
"On the contrary - it is fully in line with the laws of Montenegro. That is why we consider it inappropriate to use a political position to create tensions and destabilize a process that the citizens of Ulcinj see as an opportunity - not as a threat. The NGO sector knows how important it is for every development project to be based on the rule of law, but also on social justice. And social justice also means that Ulcinj is no longer neglected, and that its citizens have the right to work, infrastructure and a life worthy of a human being," said Orahovac.
He said that they are not asking for anything outside the law, but that they are asking for the law to be the same for everyone.
"The citizens of Ulcinj, like many local communities in Montenegro, deserve to be partners of the state, not hostages of political calculations," said Orahovac.
Milatović said earlier today that the Agreement on Cooperation in Tourism and Real Estate Development between Montenegro and the UAE nullifies key laws of our country and as such must be illegal.
In Ulcinj, Milatovć met with the Mayor of the Municipality Gencij Nimanbegu, the President of the Municipal Assembly Ivana Popović, the Vice President of the Municipality Petar Delić, the Secretary for Urbanism and Spatial Planning Škeljzen Sulejmani, and representatives of the councilors' clubs.
