Minister of Culture and Media Tamara Vujović condemned the targeting on social media of civic activist and executive director of the Network for the Affirmation of the Non-Governmental Sector (MANS), Vanja Ćalović Marković.
"Public space, including digital platforms, must remain a place for free exchange of opinions, constructive criticism and reasoned dialogue, and not a scene of insults, threats and dehumanization. Of particular concern is the fact that such attacks are increasingly directed at women who act in public, with the clear aim of discouraging, silencing and discrediting them. It is frightening that women can be exposed to this type of attack, and by anonymous or bot profiles, often politically motivated," said Vujović.
The Ministry of Culture and Media, he adds, remains strongly committed to preserving basic democratic values, freedom of speech, freedom of opinion, and the protection of all actors in public life from targeted campaigns, hate speech, and misuse of digital space.
"It is encouraging that the attacks were met with strong public condemnation and that the shameful content was quickly removed. This shows that, as a society, we are still moving forward, perhaps in small steps, but in the right direction. I call on all social and political actors to contribute to a culture of dialogue, mutual respect and responsibility in public communication. Let us cultivate decency, culture and humanity, the values by which we have always recognized ourselves," said Vujović.
