The Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) is demanding the immediate resignation of Parliament Speaker Andrija Mandić.
They said they were seeking this because of "a scandalous incident in which his close relative Danilo Mandić, two nights ago, shot two citizens, drove an official Assembly vehicle without authorization, and thus directly endangered people's lives, but also the integrity of the institution itself."
"This is a serious crime - attempted murder, for which a member of the Speaker of the Parliament's immediate family is suspected, which clearly indicates that this situation requires clear and unequivocal political and moral responsibility. In any democratic country, the Speaker of the Parliament would resign immediately in such circumstances - not because he is legally obliged to, but because he knows that after such events he is morally unworthy to continue performing his duties," the statement reads.
DPS also called on the authorities to "urgently investigate the abuse of official position", because "there is no acceptable explanation why the official vehicle of the Parliament was in the hands of a private person, at a time when a serious crime was committed".
"Because of all the above, it is clear that the request for Andrija Mandić's resignation is not a matter of political scoring, but rather the minimum responsibility that this position implies. It will also be interesting to see how Mandić's coalition partners will react to this issue and whether they will confirm their commitment to meritocracy and the European path in action or whether they will show that even in such extreme situations they do not have the capacity to oppose the real head of the parliamentary majority," the DPS announced.
