Montenegro will again request the extradition of Svetozar Marović from Serbia, Justice Minister Bojan Božović told Newsmax Balkans television.
Marović, a former high-ranking official of Montenegro, the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro, and the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison for corruption in 2016.
He then admitted that he used political authority to purchase land in Budva through the company of his son Miloš, who was then sentenced to a year in prison.
The elder Marović, like his son, whose sentence has already expired, has been avoiding serving his sentence for the ninth year by hiding in Serbia, which has not extradited him despite multiple letters of request.
Božović said that his department will continue to talk with colleagues from the Serbian Ministry of Justice, stating that they have good cooperation.
When asked by journalists that this cooperation was not evident in the Marović case, Božović said that every country has the right to decide whether it wants to extradite someone.
