The Center for Democratic Transition (CDT) announced that the Constitutional Court adopted their initiative and declared unconstitutional the provision of the Statute of the Municipality of Nikšić that designates the Day of Saint Basil of Ostrog as a city holiday.
The CDT also stated that they expect the reasoning behind the decision to clearly recognize that religious celebrations cannot be official holidays in a secular state.
"We hope that the Court did not stop at procedural issues, but acted in the spirit of protecting constitutional values and the principle of separation of state and religious communities. As we have previously warned, this initiative was contrary to the Constitution and international conventions. Another attempt to overthrow the constitutional order has been stopped – but we know that it will not be the last. Unfortunately, those who make such decisions will continue to do so, without any consequences," the CDT said.
