The European Union Ambassador to Montenegro, Johan Sattler, said that Montenegro lost valuable time at the beginning of the year due to political instability, but that he is sure that everyone now fully understands that these two years are crucial in the process of joining the European Union.
"This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity, and you can be remembered as the generation that brought Montenegro into the European Union. And this doesn't just come from me — it comes from the citizens of Montenegro, who overwhelmingly support European integration. You can't be half-hearted about something. You either are, or you aren't. Or, as Njegoš would say: 'Why are you frowning when you won't forge a path?'" he said in a speech at a gala concert marking Europe Day at the Music Center of Montenegro.
Sattler pointed out that the good news is that, together, we have managed to overcome the political deadlock, and that nothing is lost.
"Montenegro can and will make up for lost time. I believe that you will regain the pace that has commanded respect throughout Europe. And the EU will be with you every step of the way: with expert and political support, financial assistance and our new Growth Plan for Montenegro," said Sattler.
We want to show that change is not only possible — but also possible quickly, the EU ambassador added.
"You will soon see through our new environmental campaign how quickly awareness and habits can change. We want to help you keep the promise of an ecological state from your constitution and preserve your beautiful country for future generations. We want to grow together, until Montenegro takes its rightful place in the European family," announced Satler.
He reiterated that the EU's doors are open to Montenegro, but also warned that the opportunity to join the EU could be missed.
"You have heard it many times from the highest EU officials: our door is open. You are the leaders of the process. You can be a success story. You have an opportunity. But we have never hidden our expectations. The work must be done. And the opportunity may pass," the ambassador pointed out.
He said that, whether anyone likes it or not, we live in "interesting times."
"The best we can do is to stick to our principles, to work hard and to plan for the best. That is why tonight, on Europe Day, I call on you to plan for the EU — to plan for that 'day of a thousand colours'," said Sattler.
This year, he pointed out, for the first time, Europe Day is celebrated by the whole of Montenegro, from Pljevlja to Ulcinj, and from Herceg Novi to Rožaje.
"It sends a clear message that we are all in this together and that we share the vision of a European Montenegro," he said.
Satler said that the EU is a reliable partner and will never turn its back on its fundamental values and its partners.
"We will continue to support the rule of law, defend human rights and stand with Ukraine," the ambassador said.
