The civic initiative "21 May" assessed that the dioceses of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) in Montenegro have become "morbid promoters" of historical revisionism.
They are also supported, as they said, by the opportunistic policies of the executive branch, as well as the "atrophied actions" of President Jakov Milatović.
"These days, Victory Day over Fascism was marked. May 15th will soon be here, when in 1945 the resistance of collaborationist and pro-fascist forces was broken on the territory of the former Yugoslavia. Instead of Montenegro united in the memory of the victory over occupying fascism and its domestic collaborators, today we are witnessing increasingly frequent activities of the Serbian Orthodox Church aimed at rehabilitating the treacherous Chetnik movement. As with everything else they do on orders from Belgrade, now Metropolitan Joanikije, hierarchs and priests of the Serbian Orthodox Church have started to give shameless panegyrics to notorious war criminals like Pavle Đurišić or to proclaim pro-fascist Chetnik units as patriots and anti-fascists. Thus, the Serbian Orthodox Church dioceses in Montenegro, following the degenerate practice in Serbia, have become morbid promoters of historical revisionism. They are also helped by the opportunistic policy of the executive branch, as well as the atrophied actions of President Milatović," the statement reads.
However, as they said, libertarian Montenegrin anti-fascism is at the core of Montenegro, so "clero-nationalism and revisionism of the Serbian Orthodox Church are doomed to failure."
"Montenegro is not a naive and self-deceiving Serbia, nor will it ever agree to build its culture of memory on lies, manipulation and distortion of the truth," say the GI "21. maj".
