Montenegro welcomes the initiatives of Ukraine, the European Union (EU) and the United States of America (USA) to establish a temporary ceasefire and a peace process based on solid security guarantees.
This was announced today by the Public Relations Office of the President of Montenegro, following the meeting between the President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, and the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.
The statement states that Milatović met with Zelensky on the sidelines of the European Political Community Summit in Tirana, and that the two officials discussed bilateral relations and current developments on the global political scene.
"President Milatović recalled that Montenegro is the first country outside the EU to have adopted a decision on temporary protection for displaced persons from Ukraine, which approved more than 10 thousand residence requests, making it one of the countries with the largest number of Ukrainians who have received temporary protection in relation to the number of inhabitants. The start of Ukraine's negotiations on accession to the European Union last year was particularly welcomed, with confirmation that Montenegro, as the most advanced candidate and future EU member, will remain a strong advocate of Ukraine's European ambitions," the statement said.
The Public Relations Office of the President of Montenegro said that Milatović and Zelensky also exchanged views on current diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace in Ukraine.
"In this context, Montenegro welcomes the initiatives of Ukraine, the EU and the US to establish a temporary ceasefire and a peace process based on solid security guarantees," the statement reads.
It is stated that Milatović reiterated his support for Ukraine in achieving a just and lasting peace.
"In conclusion, both sides confirmed their readiness to continue political dialogue in areas of common interest - in the spirit of solidarity, partnership and shared European values. President Milatović expressed his belief that an official visit by President Zelensky to Montenegro will take place in the coming period," the Public Relations Office of the President of Montenegro said.
