Montenegro, as the most advanced candidate country for membership in the European Union (EU), remains committed to the principles and standards of human rights and freedoms, said President Jakov Milatović at a meeting with the United Nations (UN) Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk.
Milatović pointed out that democracy is not a one-way street.
"It implies the active participation of all actors in society, both the government and citizens, in preserving and promoting freedoms and responsibilities. It is also a process that is not taken for granted, but is built, nurtured and defended on a daily basis," Milatović said in a post on the X network.
He said that during his conversation with the Turk, who is on his first official visit to Montenegro, he emphasized that as the most advanced candidate country for EU membership, Montenegro remains committed to the principles and standards of human rights and freedoms.
"I conveyed that our country attaches great importance to multilateralism and strong cooperation with the UN, especially in a time of growing global challenges and conflicts," Milatović added.
He said that Montenegro will continue to be a reliable partner on the international scene and a promoter of the values of human rights and freedoms in the Western Balkans.
