The founder of the Bosniak Democratic Movement (BDP), Everin Čekić, assessed that the agreement with the United Arab Emirates in the field of tourism and real estate development could cause lasting and serious consequences for our country and its citizens.
He called on MPs, ahead of today's session of the Assembly, to vote again against the bill ratifying that document.
"After detailed analysis, it is clear that the proposed law is contrary to the Constitution and laws of Montenegro. It stipulates obligations exclusively for the state, without any specific obligations for the future investor, nor guarantees that the latter will fulfill what it may agree to. The messages coming from all sides, from citizens, the non-governmental sector, the president of the state, and even from the European Union, are clear: such an agreement, in the form in which it is proposed, is unacceptable and represents a serious burden on the European integration process of Montenegro. The time between the two votes has only further strengthened the conviction of all of us who oppose this agreement, that it may cause lasting and serious consequences for our country and its citizens. We are witnessing complete lack of transparency and inconsistency in this process, both in the statements of the potential investor and the Government of Montenegro. Mr. Alabar recently informed us that he is giving up on Velika Plaza, which directly compromised the previous statements of the relevant minister and the prime minister that neither the investor nor the location have yet been chosen," Čekić wrote in his address to the MPs.
He asked how then could someone give up something that was never given to them.
"In the meantime, new promises and new locations are arriving, which Alabar himself announces in his interviews, apparently directly offered by the Government. The hidden motive of this agreement is the Prime Minister's decision to declare state borrowing a secret, thus legitimizing the modus operandi with which he began his political career: borrowing, but secretly and organized. The bottom line is that bad economic decisions, such as the Europe Now 2 program, incompetent personnel solutions and a complete lack of vision for economic development have brought Montenegro to the brink of a financial abyss. The budget hole is already so big that new borrowing is being announced," he adds.
Čekić said that ratifying such an agreement in parliament would be "nothing more than an attempt to absolve the government and the prime minister for the damage they will cause to the state," and shifting responsibility onto MPs.
"Dear representatives of the people, you have both the power and the responsibility to stop this process. Maybe last time you didn't have the full picture, but today everything is clear. This is no longer a political issue, but a question of conscience. Adopting this law would not only be a political mistake, but a historical stain. And the shame and responsibility will not remain only on you, but also on your future generations. Before you press the button, remember the oath you took, that you will work in the interest of the state and its citizens. And the citizens are telling you clearly today: NO to the sale of Montenegro! PS My dear compatriots, I know that your party flag is green, but this time vote for the state, press red, restore dignity to our people," concluded Čekić.
