Šaranović: Financing disaster risk reduction is not a cost

Financing disaster risk reduction is not a cost, but the most efficient form of risk management at the local, national and global levels, assessed Minister of the Interior Danilo Šaranović.

He made this statement at the eighth session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GP2025), which is being held in Geneva, organized by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the Government of Switzerland.

As announced by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP), the Global Platform is the most important international forum for policy and practice in the field of disaster risk reduction, bringing together decision-makers, high-ranking representatives of governments, international organizations, the academic community, and the private sector.

It is stated that at the plenary session "Regional Progress", Šaranović emphasized the role of Montenegro as a reliable host and partner, referring to the successful organization of the European Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction for Europe and Central Asia, held in Budva in 2024.

"Last year, Budva was a European center of knowledge, vision and determination in risk reduction - and that is the image of Montenegro that we want to cherish," said Šaranović.

He said that Montenegro has developed a new Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy 2025–2030, fully aligned with the Sendai Framework.

"Today we are not talking about strategies in the future, but rather we are implementing what we have committed to the international community," added Šaranović.

The Ministry of Interior stated that at a roundtable of high-ranking government representatives, Šaranović spoke on the topic of "Financing Disaster Risk Reduction", emphasizing the need for long-term and responsible financial planning, as well as the importance of strengthening public-private partnerships.

"Financing disaster risk reduction is not a cost, but the most effective form of risk management – ​​at the local, national and global levels," Šaranović pointed out.

He, as stated in the statement, also presented specific examples from Montenegro, emphasizing the importance of the knowledge and dedication of those on whom the system rests, namely the people who work in the civil protection system.
