The president of the Zeta municipality, Mihailo Asanović, said that he would oppose the state plan to bring all hazardous and carcinogenic materials from the entire country to the red mud basin in Gornja Zeta.

This, he said, is foreseen in the State Waste Management Plan from 2025 to 2029.

"In Gornja Zeta we have KAP, which when it was built was promised to the citizens that it would not be a polluter, so in Zeta we have the highest rate of cancer. We have the devastated Morača River and asphalt bases, which have been there for years, as well as the red mud pool, which is an ecological black spot in Montenegro," Asanović pointed out at a press conference in the Parliament of Montenegro.

He said that they are appealing to state authorities to abandon "this crazy idea" in the Waste Management Plan from 2025 to 2029.

The Secretary for Spatial Planning, Environmental Protection and Traffic of the Municipality of Zeta, Jelena Aligrudić, said that the State Waste Management Plan 2025 - 2029 is entering a phase in which potential threats to the health of the municipality's residents must not be ignored.

She said that the Municipality of Zeta was not aware of the public debate on that document, and that they express opposition to the proposal to use the KAP location as a zone for temporary storage of industrial hazardous waste.

Aligrudić said that the Municipality insists that this proposal be withdrawn from the final version of the state Waste Management Plan:

"She believes that it is the Government's obligation for Montenegro to provide an alternative location, away from populated areas," said Aligrudić.

She pointed out that the Municipality of Zeta is not an ecological "buffer zone", but the heart of Montenegrin agriculture, home to thousands of people who are not seeking privileges, but the right to healthy air, clean water and a safe environment.

"We will not allow them to declare us the most favorable territory for what no one else wants," Aligrudić emphasized.

DNP MP Milan Knežević said at a press conference that the people of Zeća are among the first in Montenegro in terms of the number of people suffering from malignant diseases.

"I will not appeal as the mayor, I will warn the state authorities that if they do that, we will invade the red mud pool, we will break into KAP and we will secure that location... We cannot allow the area where Lake Skadar, the Bolje sestre water source, and the airport are located, to be designated as the regional waste of Montenegro in state plans, programs and studies," said Knežević.

He stressed that he would not organize protests, but would offer resistance.
