France remains one of the most reliable and valued allies that supports Montenegro's European dream, said Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović, stating that the partnership between the two countries is strategic, principled and lasting.
Milatović attended a ceremonial reception tonight, marking Bastille Day — the national holiday of France.
He said that July 14, 1789, marks not just the fall of a fortress, but the rise of an idea.
As he stated, the people of Montenegro very much understand the price and promise of freedom.
"Throughout history, we have persevered in the fight to preserve freedom and identity. Just like France, we have learned that freedom is not earned — it is always gained and preserved through courage, togetherness, and the will to persevere in principles, especially in difficult times," said Milatović.
He emphasized that the true meaning of sovereignty is not just a question of borders, but a question of values.
"It is the freedom to choose our own path, preserve our identity, and shape our own future, guided by the principle of self-determination," said Milatović.
According to him, it is precisely this mutual understanding that forms the foundation of Montenegro's partnership with France.
"A partnership that is strategic, principled and lasting," added Milatović.
He said that he is particularly proud that this year marks an important anniversary — 145 years of diplomatic relations between Montenegro and France.
Today, as he stated, that historic partnership is stronger and more meaningful than ever before.
Milatović said that France remains one of the most reliable and valued allies that supports Montenegro's European dream.
"On this path towards full membership in the European Union, we rely on the support of partners - especially France, whose leadership and vision are key to shaping a resilient and united Europe," said Milatović.
As he stated, France and Montenegro are working together to make Montenegro's membership in the EU by 2028 a reality.
Milatović said that the relationship between the two allied states within NATO has an even deeper dimension.
"In a time of increasing challenges, our unity in defending the democratic order and collective security has never been more important," said Milatović.
Montenegro, as he said, highly appreciates France's leadership role in preserving global peace and international order and strongly confirms its commitment as a reliable and responsible ally.
Milatović assessed that the strong partnership, substantive political dialogue and diversified cooperation between the two countries will be further strengthened and consolidated by the first visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Montenegro next year.
"That is why tonight, as we raise a glass in honor of the French Republic, we pay tribute not only to the glorious history of a great nation, but also to the strong friendship that binds us, and to the common future that we are building - on the foundations of solidarity, peace, and freedom," said Milatović.
