Minister of Defense Dragan Krapović proposed to the Government to annul Conclusions 41, 42 and 43 of the previous Government, which would formally end the initiative to establish a military training ground in Sinjajevina.
This proposal, the Ministry said, will be considered at the Government session on Thursday, and represents the fulfillment of the promise made to citizens to preserve and protect Sinjajevina in accordance with the principles of nature conservation, the interests of the local community, and sustainable development.
"The Ministry of Defense remains committed to transparency and openness towards citizens and local communities, with full respect for the needs of the Montenegrin Army, but also a clear message that natural beauties like Sinjajevina should be preserved for future generations," the statement said.
The plan to establish a military training ground at Sinjajevina began in 2019, and during 2020 the Government adopted Conclusions enabling the use of this area for military purposes.
This decision was met with strong opposition from local residents, environmental activists, and citizens throughout Montenegro, leading to repeated protests and camps to protect Sinjajevina.
"Krapović's proposal to repeal these conclusions represents an institutional closure of this topic and a clear signal that the Government of Montenegro will seek solutions that are in line with the interests of citizens, environmental protection and the real needs of the defense system," the Ministry said.
