Deputy Speaker of the Parliament and Democratic Party MP Zdenka Popović said she was concerned when "opposition colleagues" resorted to insulting and belittling women.
"It is not unknown that as women in politics, we face prejudice and misogynistic attacks on a daily basis, but what is particularly worrying is when colleagues from the opposition, who should be an example of respect and collegiality towards women, instead of showing appreciation and dignity, in the absence of arguments, resort to insulting and belittling women," she said.
"I would like to remind you that we have previously, in the Parliament, clearly and publicly condemned every type of attack on our colleagues, no matter who these attacks come from, and I assure you that we will always stand in defense of their dignity in the future. And that is why this time I stand with Branka Marković and every colleague who is exposed to attacks. Our fight is common, and we will not let anyone trample on the dignity of women in politics," the statement reads.
The Women's Association of the Europe Now Movement yesterday accused Social Democrat MP Nikola Zirojević of insulting and belittling women, including the party's MP Branka Marković.
Zirojević responded that "incompetent, semi-literate and primitive political figures", when they lack arguments for a meaningful debate, "always resort to some kind of threat - national, religious or, in this case, which is easiest and most profitable, female threat".
