President and MP of the Democratic People's Party (DNP), Milan Knežević, said that he is ready to contribute to a significant improvement in relations with Russia.
Knežević met with Russian Ambassador Alexander Lukashiko.
"In a friendly and cordial conversation, the leader of the DNP informed Ambassador Lukasik about the current socio-political situation in the country, especially emphasizing the upcoming challenges that await Montenegro and the Western Balkans on the geopolitical front. President Knežević expressed expectations that after the recent historic meeting between the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and the President of the United States Donald Trump, a peace agreement will be reached and the military conflict in Ukraine will end. In this regard, Knežević expressed hope that the overall relations between Montenegro and Russia will significantly improve, expressing his readiness to make his contribution in that direction," the DNP announced.
He asked the ambassador that cultural institutions in Russia consider the possibility of donating a monument to Sergei Yesenin to the municipality of Zeta.
"At the end of the meeting, the President of the DNP presented Ambassador Lukashik with a symbolic gift, a portrait of Sergei Yesenin, one of the greatest, most famous and most beloved Russian poets, in honor of the 130th anniversary of his birth and 100th anniversary of his tragic death. Bearing in mind the importance and influence of Yesenin's poetry on generations of Montenegrin readers and admirers, Knežević asked Ambassador Lukashik that official cultural institutions in Russia consider the possibility of donating a monument to Sergei Yesenin to the municipality of Zeta, because his native Ryazan and the youngest Montenegrin municipality are very similar in their natural beauty, and a monument to the eternal dreamer of Russian poetry would be an ideal cultural connection between our countries," the statement reads.
