Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović announced that he will request that the drafting of the treaty on Montenegro's accession to the European Union (EU) finally begin.
The Public Relations Office of the President of Montenegro announced that Milatović will attend the European Political Community Summit, which is being held in Copenhagen, today and tomorrow.
He said that the Summit, which brings together more than 50 leaders from the European continent, is an opportunity for Montenegro to send a strong message that it will become a member of the EU by 2028, and that it is a working action of the entire society, to which we are dedicated every day.
"At the plenary session of the summit, where I will be speaking with 10 other European leaders, including the presidents of the European Council, the European Commission, the President of France, as well as the prime ministers of Germany, Poland, Italy and the host country, Denmark, I will request that the drafting of the treaty on the accession of our country to the EU finally begin. And that will be a clear signal of European support for the enlargement policy. Montenegro will host the EU-Western Balkans Summit next year, when we will also celebrate two decades of the restoration of our country's independence. I am convinced that from that summit we could send the best possible news from Montenegro that the treaty on the accession of Montenegro to the EU is ready, and that would be a great incentive for other candidate countries on their European path," said Milatović.
The statement added that, in addition to Milatović, the plenary session of the Summit will also be addressed by European Council President Antonio Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Moldovan President Maia Sandu, German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Milatović also said that in the current geopolitical situation of numerous global crises, EU enlargement is not only a political but also an important security issue.
"I want to convey to European leaders the expectation that Montenegro and the countries of the Western Balkans need their stronger support. European unity in these challenging times is not a luxury but a necessity. With Montenegro as the 28th member of the EU, that unity will be further strengthened and the future and quality of life of our citizens will be better and safer," Milatović concluded.
