President of Montenegro Jakov Milatović is participating in the meeting of leaders of the Brdo-Brioni Process in Durres, which is being held under the motto "Common interests, shared commitment to a common future: Together towards the European Union (EU)".
Milatović's office announced that the Summit, which will be attended by regional leaders, will be an excellent opportunity to strengthen good-neighborly cooperation and all measures aimed at the full integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union.
Milatović assessed that good relations with the countries of the region are an important prerequisite for Montenegro's European path.
"In this context, I believe that the draft Treaty on the Accession of Montenegro to the EU would be a strong incentive for us to complete the remaining reforms, but also a strong signal to all Western Balkan countries that the enlargement policy is alive and that reforms are truly paying off," said President Milatović.
According to him, Montenegro is committed to preserving the stability of the Balkans and the wider Mediterranean region.
Milatović believes that stability can only be achieved if there is cooperation, forward-looking thinking, and open issues are resolved in a spirit of dialogue and compromise.
He assessed that in this regard, Montenegro must actively promote regional cooperation and lead by example, consistently advocating the values of mutual respect and good neighborly relations.
It is stated that this year's Summit will focus on the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, with consideration of all modalities of cooperation between the region and the EU, so that citizens can experience the benefits that the Union offers even before membership.
"Montenegro and the region can no longer afford the luxury of politics dealing with politics and games from the past, instead of implementing reforms and entering the EU - together. The message that the President will send at the Summit is clear: if we want young people to stay, to build the future here, we must adopt European values, instead of old habits that have brought us defeats and failures," the statement says.
The Brdo-Brioni process is a joint Slovenian-Croatian initiative launched in 2010, established to strengthen mutual trust and help the countries of the Western Balkans on their way to the European Union. Members of the initiative are Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo.
