Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden's statement in the European Parliament (EP) that the decision on Montenegro's accession should be made next year is an additional incentive for the country and a concrete result of Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović at the European Political Community summit in Copenhagen.
This was stated by Milatović's advisor for European affairs Miloš Radonjić.
"The encouraging statement by Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden in the EP that the decision on Montenegro's accession should be made next year comes just a few days after the European Political Community summit held in Copenhagen and is a concrete result of Milatović's participation in this important event that brings together European leaders," Radonjić said in a statement.
As he said, this is also an indicator of the extremely favorable climate in European capitals when it comes to achieving Montenegro's strategic goal - full membership in the EU by 2028.
Radonjić said that, during his presentation at the opening plenary session of the European Political Community Summit, Milatović sent a strong and open message that the European Union (EU) should begin drafting the Accession Treaty for Montenegro as soon as possible.
He pointed out that Milatović's address in itself represented exclusivity, as the opening plenary sessions are usually reserved for a limited number of European statesmen, but also a kind of diplomatic signal to Montenegro, considering that Milatović was the only leader of the Western Balkans to speak within that session.
"In addition, on the sidelines of the Summit, in a friendly conversation, Milatović pointed out to the Prime Minister of Luxembourg the importance of intensifying negotiations with Montenegro, which is in the interest of both the EU and Montenegro, as well as the Western Balkans region," Radonjić said.
As he added, the conversation also discussed the upcoming visit of the Prime Minister of Luxembourg to Montenegro, which should take place by the end of this year.
Radonjić recalled that Milatović had repeatedly emphasized that the EU is no longer a mere political ambition, but rather a work action, concrete work and essential reforms that citizens will feel in their everyday lives.
"If the intensive diplomatic campaign of the President of Montenegro on the regional and European level is accompanied by the necessary results in terms of fulfilling the obligations from the accession negotiations, the EU-Western Balkans Summit, which will be organized in Montenegro for the first time next year, will be the crowning achievement of the united efforts of society and an opportunity to conclude that Montenegro is at the EU's doorstep," said Radonjić.
He said that Montenegro must not wait any longer.
"It is time to finish the work that leads us to EU membership," concluded Radonjić.
