Montenegro, as the most advanced candidate in the region, deserves for the European Union (EU) to begin drafting the Accession Treaty, as a clear signal that results are more important than rhetoric, said Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović.
He announced on the X network that he spoke at a panel at the Swedish Institute for International Affairs on the Western Balkan countries' path to EU membership.
"I said that Montenegro is ready to complete negotiations by next year and join the EU in 2028. Our goal is not just to lead the process, but to become a country that restores faith in enlargement, proving that reform efforts, when genuine, always lead towards Europe," Milatović said.
Therefore, as he said, it is time for the EU to recognize the moment.
"As the most advanced candidate in the region, Montenegro deserves for the Union to begin drafting an Accession Treaty, as a clear signal that results are more important than rhetoric," said Milatović.
According to him, true integration does not end with membership - it begins there, through a lasting commitment to European values.
