Nurković: We must not allow unfortunate events to overshadow the long-standing and deeply rooted ties between Montenegro and Turkey

The unfortunate events that have recently taken place in Montenegro do not reflect the true friendship and respect that the peoples of Montenegro and Turkey cherish for each other. These incidents are an expression of the behavior of individuals, not the will of our people. We must not allow such acts to overshadow long-standing and deeply rooted ties.

This was announced by the Office of the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Montenegro, Mirsad Nurković, in a congratulatory message on the occasion of the 102nd anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey.

"Our sincere wish is to emerge from the current challenges even stronger, preserving the tradition of friendship that has lasted for almost a century and a half, and to continue working together to deepen cooperation, understanding and mutual respect between Montenegro and the Republic of Turkey," the congratulatory message added.

Nurković's cabinet emphasized that Montenegro and Turkey are bound by an exceptionally long and rich historical continuity of relations that have lasted for 146 years, which, they say, represents a true rarity in contemporary international relations.

"Our ties, established in the 19th century, testify to deep understanding, mutual respect and friendship that has survived through various historical circumstances. More recently, Turkey was among the first countries to recognize the independence of Montenegro in 2006, and today we are also connected by membership in the NATO alliance, as well as strong cooperation in the political, economic and cultural fields. Our relations are an example of how two countries can jointly build bridges of friendship and mutual trust. In the most difficult moments, our countries and peoples have shown their willingness to help each other, thereby confirming the sincerity and strength of friendship that knows no borders," the congratulatory message states.

Nurković, as he said, wished progress, stability and prosperity to the friendly people and state of Turkey.
