Montenegro is the most prepared of all candidate countries for membership in the European Union (EU), said European Commission Vice President Kaja Kalas, emphasizing that the enlargement of the Union in the next few years is a realistic option.
She said at a press conference that the EC today adopted the annual Enlargement Package, which presents a comprehensive assessment of the progress made by the enlargement partner countries over the past twelve months.
Kalas said that the priority of the current EC is enlargement, recalling Russia's aggression against Ukraine, which has changed the environment.
"Enlargement is necessary if the EU wants to be an actor on the international stage," said Kalas.
She stressed that the EU does not offer shortcuts and that enlargement remains a merit-based process.
Kalas said that the accession of new members by 2030 is a realistic goal.
"Montenegro is generally the most prepared country for EU membership and the most advanced in the EU enlargement process," said Kalas.
She said that Montenegro and Albania have made positive progress and that both are leaders in the accession process.
