Vuković: The EU wants to see Montenegro as a new member much more than many who currently make up its state government

The DPS Vice President also assessed that, with the exception of a few ministries that are doing a good job in terms of European integration, there is not a sufficient level of commitment and coordination at the Government level when it comes to our EU agenda.

The positive tone of the European Commission's (EC) report and optimistic statements by EU officials are an encouragement for anyone who wants to see Montenegro in the European Union, said Ivan Vuković, Vice President of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) and Chairman of the Committee for European Integration.

"At the same time, based on the content of the report and everything we have had the opportunity to see in our country over the past year, it is completely clear that the Union wants to see Montenegro as the 28th member state much more than certain political entities and numerous individuals who today make up its state government," he added.

Vuković also assessed that, with the exception of a few ministries that are doing a good job in the field of European integration, there is not a sufficient degree of commitment and coordination at the Government level when it comes to our EU agenda.

"In addition, the report confirms numerous assessments by the DPS and the parliamentary opposition, starting with the unconstitutional retirement of a Constitutional Court judge, the non-transparent work of the Government and its irresponsible attitude towards Parliament, through the political influence of the ruling majority on the security sector, the Public Service, the Energy Regulatory Agency and the Agency for Audiovisual Media Services, all the way to verbal attacks by high-ranking state officials on the media and the civil sector. Despite the best wishes of our European partners, I fear that, if such practices continue, we will not seize the historic opportunity we still have and become the first next EU country," concluded the DPS MP.
