Former Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapić today, on the eve of the national holiday - Njegoš Day, asked the President of the State and the Government, Jakov Milatović and Milojko Spajić, to initiate the renovation of the chapel on Lovćen, modeled after Njegoš from 1846.
In an open letter to Milatović and Spajić, Krivokapić asked them to initiate the renovation of the chapel as part of the celebration of 20 years since the independence of Montenegro, 175 years since the death of Petar II Petrović Njegoš, and 180 years since the construction of the chapel on Lovćen.
"This is our multiple obligation, vow and debt, and you two have the honor of turning the great dream and unfulfilled wish of our Metropolitan Amfilohije into reality," Krivokapić wrote in the letter.
He believes that restoring the chapel means fulfilling "not only his, but above all Njegoš's vow (alms)."
"Renovating the chapel means building it according to the model of Njegoševa from 1846! Renovating the chapel means building it from the original stone from which the first one was made! Renovating the chapel means regaining lost trust," Krivokapić emphasized.
He added that restoring the chapel means "making peace with oneself and with others."
"Renovating the chapel means renewing the awareness of togetherness and mutual forgiveness! Renovating the chapel means enabling a great turnaround through a nationwide undertaking! Renovating the chapel means renewing a libertarian Montenegro in which there are no winners and losers," Krivokapić added.
He said that restoring the chapel means "lighting a libertarian 'light' that will illuminate our path through the centuries."
Krivokapić recalled the vow of Njegoš, "a genius, an educator, a writer, a ruler and a bishop: "I want you to take me to that church on Lovćen... This is my last wish, which I ask of you, to fulfill, and if you do not give me God's faith that you will do so, as I want, then I will leave you under a curse, and my last hour will be the saddest for me and I place this sadness on your soul."
Krivokapić also recalled that the former Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral, Amfilohije, addressed the Government in 2012 with an open letter requesting the renovation of the chapel.
Krivokapić said that Amfilohije's appeal was unsuccessful at the time and quoted his words spoken on Christmas Day 2019: "Let the mausoleum remain, it does not bother anyone, but before it there is a wonderful place where the church can return to the form it has always been, with every stone. Only then will Montenegro and Montenegrins turn to each other."
He said he hopes that Milatović and Spajić will be understanding of the request and do everything to "create conditions that will not divide us."
