Luxembourg will continue to strongly support Montenegro's path towards the European Union (EU) and to strengthen cooperation based on common principles and friendship, said Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden.
As announced by the Public Relations Office of the President of Montenegro Jakov Milatović, Frieden was on an official visit to Montenegro.
"Luxembourg has shown how, with a clear vision and strong institutions, a country can transform into a great European success story. Montenegro has similar potential, with a five times larger area and a clear goal of becoming a member of the European Union. Our closest partners see this and openly support it," said Milatović.
Prime Minister Friden's visit, as reported, began with a working dinner at Villa Gorica with President Milatović.
"The meeting at the highest level confirmed the strong partnership and very close relations between the two countries, based on trust, common values and Montenegro's clear European perspective. In an open and substantive conversation, the possibilities of further strengthening political dialogue, deepening economic cooperation and accelerating Montenegro's European integration were discussed," the statement reads.
On that occasion, Frieden said that Luxembourg sees Montenegro as a serious partner on the European path.
"Luxembourg will continue to strongly support Montenegro's path towards the European Union and to strengthen cooperation based on common principles and friendship," Frieden emphasized.
Milatović emphasized that the Montenegrin diaspora in Luxembourg represents a bridge of trust, friendship and cooperation, but also a great development opportunity for Montenegro.
"The possibilities of intensifying economic cooperation were also discussed and it was pointed out that there is significant space for increasing the presence of Luxembourg companies in Montenegro, with the message that a stable, European-oriented and economically open Montenegro can be a safe destination for new investments," the press release of the Public Relations Office of the President of Montenegro states.
As stated, Milatović expressed his belief that Luxembourg will continue to provide strong support to Montenegro in fulfilling the final obligations from the European agenda, especially in the areas of the rule of law and economic governance.
"It was emphasized that further intensification of expert and technical cooperation would further accelerate the reform process and Montenegro's preparation for full membership in the European Union," the statement reads.
During the meeting, it was also confirmed that the close alliance within NATO and the high degree of alignment of the foreign policy positions of Montenegro and Luxembourg represent a clear signal of a common commitment to the stability, peace and security of Europe.
"The first official visit of Prime Minister Luka Friden to Montenegro represents an important step in further strengthening the overall relations between the two friendly countries and another confirmation that Montenegro has serious partners who believe that it can become the next European success story," the statement concludes.
