Anyone who today again persuades Serbs to find themselves in the opposition and on the political margins is not their friend, stated former Democratic People's Party (DNP) official Dragan Bojović in his resignation letter.
In his resignation letter to the president and members of the party's presidency, which "Vijesti" had access to, he said that the issues of the Serbian language and dual citizenship must be resolved exclusively through dialogue, agreement and consensus, and that they are too important to be linked in any way to any local issue.
He also said that wastewater treatment plants must be built in every municipality and that this is an ecological and civilizational minimum.
"I hereby inform you that, after long and serious consideration, I am making one of the most complex and difficult decisions in my political career to date - I am irrevocably resigning from my membership in the party and party bodies. I am very attached to the Democratic People's Party, as well as to the people who make it up. With many of you, I have shared years of struggle, political challenges, and a common vision of the society in which we want to live. Precisely for this reason, this decision is neither easy nor impulsive for me," Bojović wrote.
He said that the reasons for his resignation were not programmatic, but strategic in nature, and that he did not agree with certain strategic moves that have recently been made within the DNP.
"I completely understand the citizens of Botun and Zeta - they have gone through a real ordeal and been exposed to ecological genocide over the past decades. I believe that they, as well as the Municipality of Zeta, must be fairly and adequately compensated. At the same time, the fact is that wastewater treatment plants must be built in every municipality. This is an ecological and civilizational minimum and such plants cannot and must not be presented as polluters, because they are essentially not," adds Bojović.
He believes that any exit from power would be a strategically wrong move.
"Serbs must never leave power, not because of the power itself, of course, but because, as a constituent people, we must never again allow ourselves to be second-class citizens in our own state. For decades, we have been pushed into ghettos and to the margins of society, with attempts to place us on refugee tractors. Anyone who today again persuades us to find ourselves in the opposition and on the political margins is not our friend. On the contrary, such people, consciously or unconsciously, are opening the space for the return of the retrograde policies of the former regime that we fought against for decades."
He emphasizes that he was "among the first" to initiate the issues of the Serbian language and dual citizenship, that he constantly insists on these topics and that he will insist.
"However, these issues can and must be resolved exclusively through dialogue, agreement and consensus. They are too important to be linked in any way to any local issue. Our departure to the political margins would also mean the loss of a real opportunity to influence the resolution of these key issues, which are clearly defined by the party's programmatic commitments."
He reiterates that the differences between him and the DNP are not programmatic, but exclusively strategic.
"I cannot agree with the current strategic policies and I consider it correct and responsible to take this step because of this. I would like to emphasize in particular that all of the above remains exclusively in the domain of political differences and has nothing to do with interpersonal relations. My personal respect and friendly relationship towards everyone in the Democratic People's Party remains unchanged, regardless of political decisions," Bojović said.
He said that he would run in parliament as an independent MP, and that he would make his memberships in parliamentary committees available to the DNP parliamentary caucus.
