The European Union-Western Balkans Summit, which brings together the heads of state and government of all European Union member states, as well as the highest officials of EU institutions and leaders of the Western Balkans, will be held on June 5 in Tivat, the office of Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović announced.
The summit is hosted by Milatović, and preparations and institutional coordination for what, as his office points out, is a historic event, began with the first session of the Organizing Committee for the preparation and implementation of the summit, which was formed by the President of Montenegro.
"The session reviewed the current course of activities undertaken by the Cabinet of the President of Montenegro and determined the key tasks and deadlines of all relevant institutions that will be involved in the organization of the Summit, so that Montenegro would be fully prepared to host this important international gathering on June 5, 2026, which followed as a result of a direct agreement between President Milatović and the President of the European Council, Antonio Košta. This agreement was also confirmed by a decision of the European Council, which further strengthens the European Union's trust in the institutional capacities of Montenegro and the role of the President of the state as a responsible and credible partner in European processes," the statement reads.
The Organizing Committee for the Summit was formed by Milatović, with the aim, as announced, of ensuring full institutional coordination and efficient implementation of "all activities necessary for the organization of this high-profile international event."
The Organizing Committee includes representatives of the Office of the President of Montenegro, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of European Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Police Directorate, the Ministry of Public Administration, the Airport of Montenegro, the Municipality of Tivat and the General Secretariat of the Government.
At the first meeting of the Committee, priorities for the next phase of work were specified, as well as clear roles and responsibilities of all institutions involved, with the aim of organizing the summit at the highest political, protocol and organizational level.
"Holding the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Montenegro represents a strong political message about the place our country occupies in the European future, and the fact that this event is being organized in Montenegro confirms that our country is not waiting for European processes, but is actively participating in them and taking responsibility. In this context, the Tivat Summit represents a milestone in accelerating the process of accession to the European Union, with the clear goal of Montenegro becoming the 28th member of the European Union by 2028, based on results, reforms and a credible partnership," the statement reads.
