The Apostolic Nuncio to Montenegro, based in Sarajevo, Archbishop Francis of Assisi Čulikat, presented the Draft International Agreement between Montenegro and the Holy See on the opening of the Apostolic Nunciature in Podgorica to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ervin Ibrahimović.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the document is in line with the Government's proposal to the Vatican to establish the legal basis for the transfer of ownership through the conclusion of an international treaty.
"During the meeting, issues of common interest were discussed in the context of further improving relations between Montenegro and the Holy See, which are based on intensive and constructive political dialogue, friendly relations and the absence of open issues, with mutual readiness for their further strengthening," the statement reads.
Ibrahimović emphasized that the opening of the Apostolic Nunciature in Podgorica is a very concrete need, given the importance of further institutional strengthening of relations with the Holy See.
He emphasized that Montenegro "highly respects the spiritual and moral reputation of the Holy See," as well as its active and constructive role in resolving global, political, economic, social, environmental and other issues, "especially through advocacy for the peaceful resolution of disputes, the promotion of democracy and the protection of human rights."
The submitted Draft Agreement, as announced, will be subject to consideration and further communication within the framework of the usual procedure for harmonizing international agreements.
The Ministry of Spatial Planning, Urbanism and State Property will be the lead agency in implementing the necessary internal legal procedures on the Montenegrin side, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in part of its jurisdiction.
"Minister Ibrahimović emphasized that Montenegro is a truly multiethnic, multiconfessional and multicultural state, dedicated to the full valorization of the spiritual and cultural tradition of all religious communities. In this context, the faithful of the Catholic Church represent respected and equal citizens of Montenegro, who make a significant contribution to its social and cultural development," the statement reads.
