The Consul of Montenegro at the Consulate General in New York, Adel Omeragić, has not been removed from that position, as some media outlets reported this morning, but, according to unofficial information from Vijesti, he is considering returning to the parliamentary benches.
A source close to Omeragić told Vijesti that he is in New York, where he regularly performs his duties. He also stated that Omeragić has been present on the socio-political scene for years, that he has been a long-time spokesperson for the Bosniak Party (BS), and that his desire is to be an MP because it is one of the highest state functions that originally stems from the will of the citizens.
According to the source, Omeragić believes that this is the position in which he can make the greatest contribution and give his maximum, taking into account his previous experience and knowledge.
After the resignation of Admir Adrović, a BS MP in the Parliament of Montenegro, the position remained vacant, and the next on the list, as BS told Vijesti, is Omeragić.
According to the Law on the Election of Councilors and Representatives, the mandate belongs to the representative and it is up to Omeragić to decide whether to accept this position.
However, as Vijesti wrote, the State Election Commission (SEC) has entered a deadlock following the resignation of its former president, Nikola Mugoša, as none of its members has the authority to schedule a session at which decisions would be made. This currently makes it impossible to carry out the procedure for filling the vacant parliamentary seat.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs told RTCG that Omeragić, who had been serving as consul at the Consulate General of Montenegro in New York since December 1, had submitted a request to return to the country.
