MP Jevrosima Pejović, member of the Delegation of the Parliament of Montenegro to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE PA), participated in the leadership meeting of the General Committee for Political and Security Affairs of the OSCE PA, held on February 6 in Washington.
As announced by the Parliament of Montenegro, during the meeting, Committee Chairman Mark Vizi, Pejović and Rapporteur Tobias Winkler expressed concern about the expiration of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, in the absence of progress towards reaching a new, legally binding agreement.
They warned that the absence of limitations and verification mechanisms for strategic nuclear forces increases risks to international security and global stability, and undermines transparency and certainty in the area of arms control.
"The absence of legally binding limitations and verification mechanisms for strategic nuclear forces increases risks to international security and strategic stability at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions. It also undermines transparency and predictability, which have long been essential elements of nuclear risk reduction," Pejović, Vizi and Winkler pointed out.
Recalling that the Parliamentary Assembly has consistently emphasized that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be waged, they called on all OSCE participating States to urgently engage diplomatically to renew arms control dialogue and strengthen measures to reduce nuclear risks.
The meeting was also attended by OSCE PA Secretary General Roberto Montella.
Pejović's stay in the United States is being held at the invitation of American officials, on the occasion of the National Prayer Breakfast.
