Elections can be held, but next year, announced today Mitar Paunović, head of the Democratic Montenegro Councilors' Club in the Capital City Assembly.
He said this after earlier today, European Union councilor Miloš Mašković said that they had sent an initiative to all councilor clubs to shorten the mandate of the Capital City Assembly.
At a press conference, Mašković said that early local elections must be held in Podgorica.
"Given that three councilors cannot submit such an initiative, because the number of councilor signatures is clearly prescribed for it, the aforementioned announcement can currently be viewed solely as an idea, which is not part of the parliamentary procedure. The so-called 'European' alliance proposes holding elections in Podgorica, at a time when Montenegro has an ambitious and historic goal: closing all negotiation chapters with the European Union by the end of this year," Paunović pointed out in a statement.
He added that "opening the election campaign in the capital, where almost a third of the country's population lives, would inevitably divert political and social focus from the European agenda and slow down processes that are essential for the future of Montenegro."
"I would like to remind you that, according to the Law on the Election of Councilors and Representatives, regular - so-called general local elections in all municipalities have already been scheduled for June 13, 2027. Entering the electoral process now, forming a government that would last only a few months until the already scheduled elections, is both a politically irresponsible and financially irrational move. Such an initiative is neither European nor responsible. Our position is clear: the European agenda has no alternative. Elections can be held, but next year," Paunović said.
