The public competition for the election of the President of the Central Election Commission (CEC) will be repeated, because none of the registered candidates met the prescribed criteria for performing that function, Televizija Vijesti learned from sources close to the Commission for the Conduct of Elections of the President and Members of the CEC.

At the session held yesterday, as Televizija Vijesti learned, the members of the Commission were unanimous in their assessment that the candidates applied did not sufficiently fulfill the requirements set out in the competition.

Although the commission, based on the Law on the Election of Councilors and Representatives, is obliged to compile a list of candidates for the president and members of the Central Election Commission, it cannot do so without proposing a candidate for president. Therefore, the competition will be repeated, and new deadlines and details are expected soon.

As officially announced by the Commission, without a proposed candidate for president, it is not possible to compile a single list of candidates for president and members of the CEC, which is the Commission's obligation.

"The fact that we did not have a candidate who met the necessary criteria to be nominated for the position of CEC president does not mean that some candidates would not meet the criteria for a member of this institution," the Commission explained.

A statement published on the parliament's website states that the scoring of candidates for members of the Commission was pointless, because it is not possible to continue the procedure prescribed by law and propose a single list of candidates to the competent committee without a proposal for the CEC president.

"Therefore, the Commission has unanimously decided to launch a new public competition and will inform the Administrative Board of its decision in writing," the statement said.

The Commission invited all eligible candidates to apply for the new public call and make the selection process more competitive.

"We believe that the transparency of work and consistent respect for laws and procedures that we have demonstrated in our work so far can be a good argument and motivation of encouragement for all those who have so far had reservations about similar elections," the Commission said.

On February 4, the Commission for the Conduct of Elections of the President and Members of the Central Election Commission (CEC) established a list of eight candidates who meet the legal requirements for these positions.

As announced on the parliament's website at the time, the candidates for president and members of the CEC are Amer Šukurica, Boris Bastijančić, Veljko Vujović, Marija Raspopović, Muhamed Đokaj, Boris Vukašinović, Boško Nenezić and Gordana Mitrović.
