President of Montenegro Jakov Milatović attended the opening ceremony of the Munich Security Conference, one of the most influential global forums where key security policies are shaped and directions for future international cooperation are defined.
As announced by the Office of the President, in the presence of more than 50 heads of state and government, Milatović confirms the clear and consistent foreign policy orientation of Montenegro - a strong partnership with allies and full commitment to European and Euro-Atlantic values.
"Following Chancellor Merc's presentation, President Milatović asked a question regarding the dynamics of the European Union's enlargement, asking for his view on the basic scenario for the accession of candidate countries, including Montenegro. In his question at the opening of the conference, the President of the state specifically emphasized that enlargement is not only a process of EU integration, but also a strategic instrument for strengthening the global competitiveness and geopolitical strength of the European Union. He said that a credible enlargement policy means a stronger and more resilient Union, because an enlarged European Union means a stronger Europe," it was announced.
On the sidelines of the opening session, Milatović spoke with, among other things, the Austrian Chancellor and the German Foreign Minister.
It was also announced that meetings are planned with the President of the European Council Antonio Costa, the High Representative of the European Union Kaja Kalas, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Dick Suf, and the President of Moldova Maja Sandu. Milatović will also meet with members of the German Bundestag, further strengthening parliamentary and political cooperation with Germany.
"Every step we take today on the international stage has one goal, a safer and more European Montenegro. Our path is clear: the European Union by 2028, a strong NATO alliance and a policy of peace that provides Montenegro with stability, development and international reputation," he said.
Milatović has also been invited to attend a ceremony where Merck will be presented with a special award established in honor of US Senator John McCain, in recognition of its contribution to strengthening the transatlantic partnership and defending democratic values.
"Montenegro is also showing in Munich that, together with its partners, it is contributing to the common security and stability of Europe," it was announced.
