Montenegro remains firmly on the European path, as the most advanced candidate country with 13 provisionally closed chapters, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Ervin Ibrahimović at a meeting with a delegation of the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET).
The delegation, led by AFET Chair David McAllister, also included Members of the European Parliament (MEP) Michael Galler, Tonino Picula, Marta Temido, Suzana Cecardi, Serban-Dimitrije Sturdza, Marjan Šarec and Stanislav Stojanov.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) announced that the interlocutors discussed Montenegro's progress in the process of accession to the European Union (EU), with particular emphasis on the results achieved in the negotiation chapters and the ambition to conclude the negotiations by the end of this year.
"Ibrahimović pointed out that Montenegro remains the most advanced candidate country, with 13 provisionally closed chapters, and stressed that European integration enjoys broad political and social consensus," the statement said.
The conversation, as stated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed Montenegro's full compliance with the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy, as well as its contribution to joint initiatives in the field of security and defense.
"Opinions were exchanged on current geopolitical challenges, including hybrid and cyber threats, the spread of disinformation and foreign interference, highlighting the need to further strengthen cooperation with EU institutions in this area," the statement said.
Speaking about regional developments in the Western Balkans, the interlocutors emphasized the importance of good neighborly relations, dialogue and regional cooperation as key elements of the enlargement process.
Ibrahimović reiterated that Montenegro remains a reliable partner and factor of stability in the region, committed to European values and principles.
"The visit of the AFET delegation was assessed as a strong confirmation of the continuous and substantive political dialogue between Montenegro and the EP, as well as an additional incentive for the country's further progress on its European path," the statement said.
