Montenegro in the European Union is a strategic interest of our citizens, but it is not the interest of Aleksandar Vučić, which is why new obstructions should be expected, announced today the president of the Social Democrats (SD) and one of the leaders of the European Alliance, Damir Šehović.
"During today's meeting with the delegation of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee (AFET), led by David McAllister, we openly discussed Montenegro's European path and the challenges we face, but above all, the danger of the value and institutional collapse we are witnessing," Šehović said in a statement.
He added that together with the presidents of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) Danijela Živković, the Croatian Civic Initiative (HGI) Adrijan Vuksanović and Miloš Konatar from URE, he took the opportunity to thank the European partners for their continued attention and support, but also to clearly point out the deep gap between the formal progress in the negotiations and the real situation in Montenegrin society.
"Montenegro, viewed through technical and administrative parameters, is today very close to membership in the European Union. Laws are being adopted, chapters are being closed, obligations are being fulfilled. However, in essence, the country is sliding into a serious crisis of values. While Brussels is talking about negotiation chapters, in Montenegro the ideologies that brought war, destruction and suffering to the Balkans are being rehabilitated," he said.
Šehović pointed out that the European Union is not just a set of norms and procedures, but above all a political and civilizational community.
"I warned that in Montenegro, the civilizational values on which modern Europe is based are increasingly being relativized and denied. We are witnessing the normalization of extreme Chetnik ideology, the relativization of war crimes, attempts at historical revisionism, and the systematic undermining of the civil and secular character of the state. People whose policies have been opposed to European values for decades are now running institutions," said Šehović.
He added that we have an extremely constructive attitude towards all issues related to the European agenda, because for us the European path is not a party issue, but a state issue.
"It was the opposition that established the Western European civilizational framework of Montenegro, despite the strong opposition of those who hold power today. However, constructiveness towards EU laws does not mean silence in the face of the destruction of the foundations of a civil, secular and pro-European Montenegro," said Šehović.
In particular, as he stated, it was emphasized that European partners must carefully consider the entire political context in which the accession process is taking place.
"Montenegro needs an authentically European government, dedicated to the interests of its own state and its citizens, and not a structure that will subordinate its political actions to regional centers of power or foreign geopolitical interests. In other words, it does not need a government that, at the first signal from the authorities in Belgrade, will act in the interests of official Serbia, not Montenegro. Montenegro in the European Union is a strategic interest of our citizens, but it is not the interest of Aleksandar Vučić, which is why new obstructions should be expected," said Šehović.
Šehović also pointed out that the essence is not only when Montenegro will become a member of the European Union, but what kind of state will join that community.
"Europe must know that the fight for a European Montenegro today is, above all, a fight to preserve its identity, dignity and value system," concluded Šehović.
