The President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, announced today that in other cases, persons accused of significantly more serious crimes than the crimes for which former Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Vesna Bratić is accused have been released to defend themselves from prison.
"Respecting the jurisdiction of the judicial authorities in the proceedings against Vesna Bratić, it is evident that the manner of the arrest and detention of a university professor resonated strongly with the public, leaving the majority of citizens with the impression of treatment reserved for the most serious forms of crime," Milatović stated on the X network.
Such a perception, according to Milatović, raises the issue of standards and proportionality, especially considering that in other cases, persons accused of significantly more serious crimes have been released to defend themselves from freedom.
"The rule of law implies equal standards - the determination and strength of the state towards organized crime, corruption and fugitives, but also a measured, professional and dignified approach towards those who are available to institutions. Only consistency, without selectivity, can restore citizens' trust in the system," he said.
Milatović added that the citizens of Montenegro have been waiting for years for answers from the judiciary to numerous issues that burden our society.
"Also, citizens cannot be satisfied that even after more than five years of democratic changes, institutions are still weak and do not have an adequate response to numerous social problems, as evidenced by recent events related to the escapes of convicted leaders of criminal groups," Milatović pointed out.
He also said that in such a system we cannot talk about a complete sense of justice in society.
"On the contrary, the impression is that we live in a country where powerful individuals, who for decades have been disintegrating public goods and placing them in private pockets, mock institutions with freedom and impunity," Milatović concluded.
"Vijesti" reported earlier today that due to damage of at least 400.000 euros caused by the dismissal of more than 140 kindergarten, primary and secondary school directors, former Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Vesna Bratić was arrested yesterday morning in an investigation by the Special State Prosecutor's Office (SDT).
