Živković: DPS MPs to resign from positions of Deputy Speaker of the Parliament and heads of three committees if two laws are adopted

The DPS president said that they are unreservedly committed to the ideal of Montenegro as a full member of the EU, but that they do not agree to, in that name, legitimize "the undemocratic, anti-constitutional and, increasingly, anti-civilizational actions of the current government."

The members of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) who hold the positions of Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Co-Chair of the Committee for Comprehensive Electoral Reform, Chair of the Committee on European Integration and Chair of the Committee on Anti-Corruption will submit irrevocable resignations if the majority members of the parliament decide tomorrow (March 6) to support the proposed laws on internal affairs and the National Security Agency (ANB), and the DPS will review its future activities in parliament.

This was announced tonight by the party's president and MP, Danijel Živković.

The Deputy Speaker of the Parliament and co-chair of the Committee for Comprehensive Electoral Reform is Nikola Rakočević, the chairman of the Committee for European Integration is Ivan Vuković, while Jevto Eraković heads the Committee for Anti-Corruption.

Živković said that, following the European Commission's official position regarding the proposals for these two laws, there is no doubt that Interior Minister Danilo Šaranović "doubly deceived the Montenegrin public."

"Contrary to his allegations, the adoption of these two controversial legal solutions is not a condition for closing the chapter in the negotiation process with the EU, nor was it previously fully coordinated with the European Commission. Therefore, it is clear that this is a mere desire of the parliamentary majority to, contrary to elementary democratic norms, establish unlimited control over the security sector in Montenegro. The catastrophic consequences that could occur with the adoption of the aforementioned laws have been pointed out, in addition to the parliamentary opposition, by leading Montenegrin NGOs dealing with human rights issues, prominent individuals, as well as the chairman of the Committee on Defense and Security in the Parliament of Montenegro, who is also a member of the ruling majority," Živković wrote on Iks.

"If, despite all the above, using brutal political force, the deputies of the parliamentary majority still decide to support such legal solutions tomorrow, the DPS deputies who cover the functions of the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, the co-chair of the Committee for Comprehensive Electoral Reform, the President of the Committee for European Integration and the President of the Committee for Anti-Corruption will submit irrevocable resignations, and the DPS will review the method of future action in the Montenegrin Parliament. The Democratic Party of Socialists remains of the view that the integration of Montenegro into the European Union is the most important goal of state policy and the most important political task of our generation. We remain unreservedly committed to the ideal of Montenegro as a full-fledged EU member state. On the other hand, we do not agree to legitimize, in that name, the undemocratic, anti-constitutional and, increasingly, anti-civilizational actions of the current government," said Živković.
