The Commission for the Implementation of the Election of the President and Members of the Central Election Commission (CEC) will announce the third public competition for the election of the president and four members of the Commission on March 16th.
The previous two calls were unsuccessful. The Commission announced the last public call on January 5, and the application deadline was January 27, 2026.
Ten candidates applied for the positions of president and members of the commission, and after checking the documents, eight candidates were found to meet the legal requirements. Interviews with the candidates were held on February 23rd.
A statement published on the parliament's website states that the scoring of candidates for members of the Commission was pointless, because it is not possible to continue the procedure prescribed by law and propose a single list of candidates to the competent committee without a proposal for the CEC president.
Based on the Law on the Election of Councilors and Representatives, the Commission is obliged to compile a list of candidates for the president and members of the Central Election Commission, which it cannot do without proposing a candidate for president.
"Therefore, the Commission has unanimously decided to launch a new public competition and will inform the Administrative Board of its decision in writing," the statement said.
The first competition for their election was unsuccessful. The Commission, headed by Justice Minister Bojan Božović, announced on December 24th last year that they had unanimously decided that the only candidate for president from that competition did not meet the legal criteria.
The conditions for the election of the president and members of the CEC include that candidates have at least a VII1 level of education in the field of legal sciences, at least ten years of professional experience, of which at least five in the field of elections.
