The President of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), Danijel Živković, and Vice President Aleksandra Vuković Kuč met with Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos.
"In that conversation, the DPS delegation pointed out that leaving the leading positions in the Montenegrin parliament is a response measure, following the passage of anti-constitutional and anti-European laws on internal affairs and the National Security Agency by the authorities, and that the Democratic Party of Socialists will in no way participate in simulating democracy and feigned regularity in the political life of Montenegro," the DPS announced.
They add that Živković and Vuković Kuč reminded Kos that DPS has been a constructive opposition all this time:
"Often even to the detriment of their own ratings, and they underlined that this was also seen in action when reaching an agreement on the census, passing the IBAR law, passing all laws with a blue flag, and supporting certain solutions in the judiciary."
They explained in a statement that after the government "legalized the persecution and espionage of citizens," DPS "as the party that created the state" and opened its European perspective can no longer be a constructive opposition to the anti-Montenegrin and anti-European government:
"That the current government includes anti-Western elements who have never believed, and do not believe today, in European values, and that this represents a great danger to the European path as the most important strategic goal of Montenegro. In conclusion, at the meeting with Commissioner Kos, an agreement was reached that cooperation with the opposition and broad social consensus are crucial for the success of Montenegro's European integration, despite some recent statements from the government that they do not need the opposition for this important national task," it was announced.
