Third CEC competition: Nine candidates applied

Nine candidates applied for the third public competition for the election of the president and four members of the Central Election Commission (CEC), one less than in the previous advertisement.

Alija Beganović, Boris Vukašinović, Boris Bastijančić, Boško Nenezić, Damir Rebronja, Muhamed Đokaj and Uroš Vukićević applied for the position of president and member of the CEC, while Veljko Vujović and Marija Raspopović submitted applications for the position of member.

All of the above applied for the second competition, except that Nenezić and Vukašinović only applied for members of the CEC, and not for president.

Vukićević then submitted an application only for president, while now he is running for both president and member of the CEC.

The Commission, as announced after today's session of that body, will, after obtaining data from the competent authorities, compile a list of those who meet the legal requirements.

The previous two CEC competitions were unsuccessful.

The Commission, headed by Justice Minister Bojan Božović, announced on December 24th last year that they had unanimously decided that the only candidate for president from the first competition did not meet the legal criteria.

The Commission announced the second public call on January 5, and the deadline for applications was January 27, 2026. After checking the documentation, it was determined that eight candidates met the legal requirements. Interviews with the candidates were held on February 23.

However, it was subsequently announced that no candidate had sufficiently fulfilled the criteria on the basis of which they could be nominated for president, so "scoring candidates for members of the Commission was pointless, because it is not possible to continue the procedure prescribed by law and propose a single list of candidates to the competent committee without a proposal for the president of the CEC."

Based on the Law on the Election of Councilors and Representatives, the Commission is obliged to compile a list of candidates for the president and members of the Central Election Commission, which it cannot do without proposing a candidate for president.
