URA Nikšić: There are those who want and will try to disavow the noble idea of ​​erecting a memorial to Joko Baletić

"After the Nikšić Municipal Assembly adopted the initiative to erect a memorial to Joko Baletić, the Municipal Board of the Civic Movement URA Nikšić takes this opportunity to thank everyone who supported this idea and thus joined us in defending anti-fascist values, on which our movement, our city, and our country are unequivocally based," the Municipal Board of the Civic Movement URA Nikšić announced today.

Last night, the Nikšić Municipal Assembly adopted an initiative to erect a memorial to Joko Baletić in that city, as well as an initiative to establish a culture of remembrance for the victims of ideological liquidations committed by the communist movement and communist regime during and immediately after World War II.

"The reaction that our initial initiative met with confirmed its justification, and the massive support from the people of Nikšić showed that the city under Trebjes was just waiting for someone to remember that it was necessary to give deserved recognition to the heroine of World War II and give her a deserved place among those who made the greatest sacrifice on the altar of Montenegro's freedom - their own lives. We are glad that we forced both the members of the Council for Proposing Names, Settlements, Streets and Squares, and the councilors of the Nikšić Municipal Assembly - at least the majority of them - to no longer hide behind 'abstentions', but to clearly and loudly opt for the side of anti-fascism," the Nikšić URE said.

They added that "in addition to the aforementioned gratitude to all individuals, groups, political organizations and institutions that have stood on the civic front in defense of anti-fascism in recent weeks, supporting our initiative, the Municipal Board of GP URA Nikšić emphasizes that only the first step has been taken, and that we will carefully monitor further developments in the situation, aware that there are still those who want to, and who will try to, disavow this noble idea."

"We will certainly not allow this to happen, neither when we enter the process of proposing the design of the memorial nor when deciding on its location. This is also the reason why our initial initiative specifically requested that the location be Trg Slobode exclusively. Once again, thank you to our city of Nikšić, with a repeated statement from the statement of the Municipal Board of GP URA Nikšić, issued after that shameful initial vote on our initiative, and that statement is - the memorial to Joko Baletić will soon be where it belongs, in the center of Nikšić, next to Ljubo Čupić, as an eternal reminder of the significance of the name Trg Slobode," said the Nikšić URA.
