Instead of actions and messages of an ecological nature on the occasion of Earth Day, the citizens of Berane were sent messages that this catastrophic situation is excellent, and they were "rewarded" with a new price list for utility services, said Milijana Vučeljić Golubović, member of the Executive and Municipal Board of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) Berane.
As she pointed out, International Earth Day, April 22, is a day that calls for collective responsibility to protect the environment, and clean air, safe drinking water, healthy soil, and stable climate conditions represent the basic ecological factors on which the health and normal functioning of every individual and society as a whole depend.
"Aware that every action, initiative and dialogue aimed at preserving the environment is important, and given the real situation, we wonder if there is hope and salvation for the environment and the environment in which we live," she said.
Vučeljić Golubović adds that concern for the health and normal life of the citizens of Berane is more than justified, considering that in all public areas, in the city and villages, on the banks of rivers and in the rivers themselves, there are huge amounts of waste, including hazardous waste.
"A particular problem is the quality of drinking water, which is not suitable for use for most of the year. Such a situation not only threatens the health of citizens, but also places an additional burden on household budgets due to frequent breakdowns of household appliances caused by mud, sand and dirt," she said.
She points out that "the citizens' hope that the evident problems would be resolved was extinguished precisely on April 22, 2026, on Earth Day," after the Tenth Session of the Berane Municipal Assembly, at which the reports, plans and work programs of local companies responsible for communal services were discussed.
"The fear of worse, if worse can happen, does not come from the documents under consideration, but from the praise and votes of support from the ruling majority, which confirm that this kind of ecological chaos is a good situation for them," she said.
"What are the further expectations, when a councilor, otherwise an "expert" in waste management, says: 'Why measure waste every day, sometimes is enough, we don't measure gold'?" she asked, adding that the same councilor stated that "the municipal company that he 'inherited after DPS was the biggest disgrace'".
"In addition, they don't blink when he tells a lie about the number of inherited unpaid wages, outdated machinery, and debts to suppliers," she pointed out.
According to her, the councilor called "two-year-old utility vehicles, new utility containers, new green and dairy market facilities, a reconstructed administrative building, landscaped parks, local roads, a city cemetery and chapel, perfect accounting records, an optimal number of employees, and a revised master plan for the construction of a regional sanitary landfill with a recycling center" a disgrace.
"This is the 'disgrace' left after DPS," she said.
"And we from the DPS say that it is a disgrace to deceive citizens, that it is a disgrace to break the law and then be acting director for eight years for not meeting the general requirements, i.e. educational qualifications, that it is a disgrace to dispose of, bury and burn waste next to the Lim River, and push it into the Lim River at night, it is a disgrace to call an illegal dumpsite a transfer station, it was a disgrace to block the collection and disposal of waste at a location regulated in accordance with the law," said Vučeljić Golubović.
As he adds, the message is being sent to citizens that "the catastrophic situation is excellent."
"Instead of actions and messages of an ecological nature on the occasion of Earth Day, the citizens of Berane were sent messages that this catastrophic situation is excellent, that it should continue like this, and on top of that, the citizens were 'rewarded' with a new price list for utility services, so that from next month we will pay for the poison we are poisoning ourselves with at higher prices," said Vučeljić Golubović.
"The relationship between supply and demand, as an economic principle that influences price formation, translated into the form of the current Berane government, is: 'The turbider the water, the higher the water prices; the more illegal dumps there are, the higher the prices for waste collection and disposal,'" she added.
She points out that, during the radio broadcast of the session, while her party colleague was speaking, a program was broadcast.
"If we add to all this the impression of euphoria that prevailed in the assembly hall because after ten years a report on the work of the Berane Regional Business Center LLC was on the agenda, as well as the fact that during the radio broadcast of the session, while the DPS councilor was speaking, a clip from the show 'It Happened Today' was broadcast for a few minutes, we conclude that the sessions of the Berane Municipal Assembly serve to verify inaction, lawlessness and falsehoods," he concludes.
