The Chairman of the Delegation of the EU-Montenegro Parliamentary Committee for Stabilization and Association, Thomas Weitz, assessed that Montenegro's membership in the European Union is "within reach", stating that the EU can be happy about the future accession of a country that, as he says, has shown openness, readiness for reforms and a clear pro-European orientation.
In a statement marking 20 years of Montenegro's independence, he stated that over the past two decades, this Western Balkan country has made impressive progress towards European integration: out of a total of 33 negotiation chapters, 14 have already been successfully closed, while numerous others are close to completion.
"There is reason to celebrate not only Montenegro's 20 years of independence, but also the country's strong progress towards European integration. The accession of this Western Balkan country to the European Union is truly within reach," he said.
As he added, Montenegro has distinguished itself in recent years with its openness, readiness for reforms, and dedicated work.
"The citizens of Montenegro, with their clear pro-European commitment, have more than earned their place in the EU. Finally, Montenegrins will benefit from everything the European Union has to offer," he said.
He warns, however, that although negotiations are at an advanced stage, the remaining chapters must be closed quickly.
"It is now up to the Government of Montenegro to make the final step forward, especially in the areas of the rule of law (Chapter 23), freedom and security (Chapter 24), as well as environmental and climate protection (Chapter 27). The European Union can count itself fortunate that a country like Montenegro, which brings not only cultural wealth, but also exceptional natural treasures, such as one of the last wild rivers in Europe, will soon join it. As a long-standing friend of this country, I am firmly convinced that Montenegro will successfully complete the final part of its journey towards EU membership," said Weiz.
He recalled that the goal is "28 by 28" — for Montenegro to become the 28th member of the European Union by 2028.
He said that the overall outcome of the accession negotiations is extremely positive, despite remaining challenges.
