President of Montenegro Jakov Milatović congratulated citizens on Independence Day, saying that the purpose of the state is for laws to apply equally to everyone.
Milatović, in a video address delivered to the media, said that 20 years have passed since the day Montenegro regained its independence.
According to him, 20 years after the restoration of independence, "we have grown up enough to pass the maturity test - that the laws apply equally in Podgorica, Pljevlja, Nikšić, Rožaje, Ulcinj and Cetinje."
"That they apply equally to the rich, politicians and civil servants. That every child in school receives the best knowledge for success in life. That a patient does not wait months for an intervention, or because they do not know who to call. That a young person does not have to leave Montenegro to get a real chance. That honest work is stronger than a connection or a party card. That is the meaning of the state. That is the meaning of independence," Milatović added.
He said that three years ago, citizens decided to give him a mandate to safeguard the Constitution, protect and build independent and strong institutions, so that Montenegro would surely follow the European path.
"This mandate is an obligation to every citizen who wants a successful, fair and European state. I want to continue to be the voice of all citizens, even though it was often easier to remain silent and not hold grudges," said Milatović.
He stated that he will continue to repeal laws that violate the Constitution.
"We continue to defend the Constitution together. I will continue to return those laws that violate the Constitution and those laws that are against the interests of citizens and the state, because we all demand accountability when institutions try to hide behind political commerce," said Milatović.
He said that they have opened the doors to citizens, young people, professionals, professors, doctors, workers, businessmen and anyone who has a suggestion, a complaint, or something nice to say about the country in which they live.
Milatović said that Montenegro has great ambitions.
"In a few days, European leaders will come to Tivat, to Boka, to Montenegro. The whole of Europe in Montenegro. Which restored its independence 20 years ago, and is now entering the European Union (EU). We have taken responsibility to complete the job, for which the citizens gave us a mandate," Milatović said.
According to him, Montenegro in Europe is a court that operates according to the law.
"A school that teaches children to think. Healthcare that doesn't wait. A municipality that serves its citizens. A state that doesn't ask whose you are, but what you know, how you work and whether you respect the rules. Such a Montenegro will become a member of the EU. Orderly. Solidarity. Economically strong. Dignified," Milatović added.
He said that 20 years after the restoration of independence, the task is "to turn independence into a good life, to turn freedom into justice, to turn the European opportunity into a result."
"Dear citizens, Montenegro is our common home, which is preserved through work, order and responsibility. Happy Independence Day. May Montenegro be ours forever," Milatović concluded.
