MVP: Team Montenegro wins Consulate Cup in New York

The Montenegrin team won first place at this year's Consulate Cup, a diplomatic football tournament held in New York.

As announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MVP), this tournament had special significance this year as an event organized in anticipation of the World Cup.

The government department said that, although the Consulate Cup is already recognized as a traditional gathering of the diplomatic community in New York, Montenegro participated in the tournament for the first time this year and won the winning cup in its first appearance.

It is stated that the team was formed by the Consulate General of Montenegro in New York, at the initiative of Consul General Snežana Jonica, with the support of the expatriate community.

"In accordance with the tournament rules, the team had to include at least one diplomat, as well as at least two women," the statement said.

The Montenegrin team began the competition in Group E, against Japan, the United States, the Netherlands, Niger and Suriname.

Montenegro defeated all opponents in the group, without conceding a goal.

In the rest of the competition, Montenegro defeated Sweden, then Qatar, and advanced to the semi-finals without conceding a single goal.

In the semi-finals, it defeated Cameroon and in the finals, Ghana, thus winning first place in the competition of diplomatic teams from numerous countries.

The Consulate General of Montenegro in New York thanked the members of the Montenegrin team, led by captain Miško Dabetić, who showed exceptional dedication, fighting spirit, team spirit and worthily represented Montenegro on the field.

"The Consulate General would like to express special gratitude to the Football Association of Montenegro, which provided the national team jerseys and thus enabled the Montenegrin team to compete in the tournament in a recognizable and representative outfit," the statement said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that this success represents a strong confirmation of the unity of the Consulate General of Montenegro in New York and the Montenegrin diaspora, as well as the sporting spirit and commitment to the worthy representation of Montenegro in the international community.
