Today's postponement of the Kolašin Municipal Assembly session is the best indicator of the crisis in which the local government finds itself, the DPS-SD-Citizens of Kolašin Councilors' Club announced.
As they state, after months of ignorant and incorrect treatment of opposition councilors, who have repeatedly shown responsibility towards the citizens of Kolašin and with their presence ensured a quorum for the work of the Assembly and Assembly committees, today this practice has come to an end.
"The opposition councilors decided to deny the quorum for the start of the session and thus send a clear message that responsibility, respect and political dialogue cannot be assumed only when the ruling majority needs them. Of particular concern is the fact that even after hours of attempts, phone calls and gatherings of councilors from different locations, the ruling majority was unable to provide a sufficient number of its councilors for the full work and decision-making of the local parliament. This once again confirms what the opposition has been warning about for a long time, that the current government no longer has the political capacity or internal cohesion necessary for the normal functioning of local self-government," they said.
They add that it is unacceptable that opposition councilors are saving the functioning of the Assembly, enabling the adoption of decisions of importance to citizens and the local community, while at the same time their contribution is ignored, their proposals are rejected without discussion, and political dialogue is reduced to a formality.
"Today's session showed that the problem with the functioning of the Assembly is not the opposition, but a serious crisis within the ruling majority itself. If the government is not capable of ensuring the presence of its own councilors to hold sessions and make the most important decisions for the citizens of Kolašin, then the question of its political legitimacy and ability to govern the municipality in the coming period is rightly raised. The opposition will continue to act responsibly and in the interests of citizens, but it will not accept the role of political decorum that serves exclusively to ensure a quorum when the ruling majority needs it. It is time for those in power to take responsibility for the situation they themselves have created," they said.
This councilors' club emphasizes that Kolašin deserves a serious, stable and responsible local government, not a government that is no longer able to provide even the most basic conditions for the functioning of its own parliament.
