Ibrahimović: CoE recommendations have an important role in Montenegro's European integration process

The recommendations and reports of the Council of Europe (CoE) have a significant role in Montenegro's European integration process and are an important framework for further improvement of the legislative and institutional system, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Ervin Ibrahimović.

As announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), he met with the rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Ljiljana Tangi, as part of the post-monitoring dialogue with Montenegro.

The statement states that Ibrahimović expressed his satisfaction with Tanga's visit at what he said was an important moment for Montenegro.

He emphasized that Montenegro is intensively implementing reforms and remains strongly committed to its main foreign policy goal - full membership in the European Union (EU) by the end of 2028.

Ibrahimović recalled that the successful holding of the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Tivat and the encouraging messages from European officials further confirmed Montenegro's progress on its European path.

He emphasized that the positive report of the European Commission for last year confirmed Montenegro's status as the most advanced candidate for EU membership, while the trend of closing negotiation chapters continued in 2026.

Ibrahimović emphasized that the recommendations and reports of the Council of Europe play an important role in Montenegro's European integration process and represent an important framework for further improvement of the legislative and institutional system and sustainable development of the country.

Speaking about foreign policy priorities, Ibrahimović stated that, in addition to EU membership, Montenegro remains committed to credible membership in NATO, strengthening good neighborly relations, regional cooperation, and a more active role in multilateral organizations.

"He particularly pointed to the chairmanship of the Western Balkans Fund and the Berlin Process this year, as well as the intensive preparations for assuming the chairmanship of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers," the MFA statement said.

Ibrahimović assessed that the completion of the post-monitoring process would further strengthen Montenegro's international position ahead of this important presidency.

Tangi reportedly thanked her for the open conversation and emphasized the importance of the visit for the post-monitoring dialogue process.

"She welcomed Montenegro's commitment to reforms and European integration, expressing the expectation that talks with representatives of institutions will provide a comprehensive insight into the progress made and upcoming activities in the areas covered by the mission," the MFA statement said.
